UN Secretary-General expresses optimism about future, pledges support for Mahama, AU

President John Dramani Mahama engaged in discussions with outgoing United Nations Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, during his activities on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly. In a statement, the Presidency revealed that Mr Guterres, who has held the position since 2017, congratulated President Mahama on his endeavours and expressed optimism about their potential.

The UN Secretary-General highlighted the adoption of the draft UN Resolution on reparations and reparatory justice, expressing confidence in its future outcomes and reactions. Mr Guterres also praised President Mahama for his leadership and dedication to Ghana and Africa, recognizing his support for the Accra Reset Agenda and advocacy for reforms in the global financial system.

The meeting also addressed regional matters in West Africa and the Sahel, with a specific focus on peace and security concerns. President Mahama, in return, praised Mr Guterres for his leadership during challenging times in international diplomacy and expressed his well wishes for his successor as the Secretary-General. Both leaders have fostered a friendly relationship throughout Mr Guterres' tenure.
