UK’s Burnham risks reopening Brexit debate with bid to find consensus on EU ties

Prime Minister Andy Burnham threatened to reignite the contentious Brexit debate on Tuesday by pledging to explore consensus on deeper ties with the European Union. A recent YouGov poll indicated that 55% of voters favored rejoining the EU, while 34% opposed such a move; 59% supported closer ties without complete reintegration. Burnham's approach mirrors that of his predecessor Keir Starmer, but the pursuit of consensus may test his political acumen in a country still grappling with the aftermath of Brexit.

Critics, such as Richard Tice, deputy leader of Reform UK, accused Burnham of attempting to re-enter Brussels covertly. Recent opinion polls have shown Labour marginally ahead of Reform UK, with the Conservative Party trailing significantly. Burnham previously expressed a desire for Britain to rejoin the EU within his lifetime but later clarified that he was not proposing this step and respected the outcome of the 2016 referendum.
