Ukraine Deploys Amphibious Robot on First 40-km Frontline Supply Mission

Ukrainian forces successfully completed their inaugural supply mission utilizing a locally designed amphibious unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) on a 40-kilometer route, blending land and water travel to reach frontline positions. The mission was executed by personnel of a different mechanized brigade. This breakthrough addresses the challenge posed by water barriers like rivers and canals, which typically complicate or render conventional ground robot deployment impossible, forcing troops to navigate alternative paths or utilize varied vehicles.

The amphibious UGV possesses the capability to seamlessly transition from a land-based ground robot to a water-operating vehicle, eliminating the need for platform switching. Preparatory testing and enhancements were carried out over several months in collaboration with Ukrainian troops, following the ministry's report. The design of the vehicle was tailored to meet the specific operational demands of the military, incorporating insights from robotic platforms and the front-line terrain.

The project received financial assistance from the Brave1 defense innovation cluster, which supports Ukrainian arms manufacturers in the development and scaling of their projects. The cluster also introduced a targeted "Amphibious UGV" initiative under its revised grant scheme. The growing adoption of unmanned ground vehicles in Ukraine's military operations includes their deployment for logistics, strikes on Russian targets, and assaults on military infrastructure.

During Operation Vivaldi, aimed at liberating Eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region, the 3rd Army Corps used UGVs for the first time in assaulting Russian positions. The "NC13" strike UGV unit reconfigured kamikaze robots, equipping them with Bullspike grenade launchers before launching attacks against Russian positions. The robotic systems reportedly detonated inside enemy shelters, with Russian forces potentially misinterpreting the attack as a conventional infantry assault due to the stealthy nature of the robotic deployment.

Additionally, Ukrainian troops have experimented with airdropping unmanned robotic systems from heavy bombers, like the "Gryphon," and employing robotic platforms to target Russian positions and logistics assets up to 15 kilometers away from the front line.
