U.S. Senate passes Protect College Sports Act: What to know

The U.S. Senate has passed the Protect College Sports Act by a 77-22 vote, marking a significant step towards federal legislation in the rapidly evolving world of college athletics. The bill, authored by Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Maria Cantwell, focuses on restructuring the complex landscape of college sports, particularly in the wake of the growing influence of the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era.

Key provisions of the legislation include granting the NCAA an antitrust exemption, limiting athletes to one transfer without penalty, and increasing the revenue-sharing cap to nearly $50 million. The bill also seeks to implement a standardized five-year, age-based eligibility policy, enforce NIL deal rev-share caps, and establish an agent registry with a maximum 5% fee.
