Trust in Milei falls to lowest level since taking office, report finds

Confidence in the government of Javier Milei has hit its lowest point since he assumed office in December 2023, according to the Government Confidence Index report by Torcuato Di Tella University’s School of Government. In September, trust in the Milei administration stood at 1.94 points out of a possible 5, marking a 5.9% decrease from the previous month. This score has remained constant with the administration's figures from July and September 2025.

The ICG, a monthly survey conducted since 2001, evaluates trust in the government across five dimensions: general interest, overall assessment, honesty, problem-solving ability, and efficiency. The Milei government's ICG has dropped by 21.4% since the end of 2025, with most of the decline occurring during the first five months of 2026. Since then, the index has hovered around 2 points, with small monthly fluctuations.

Notably, government trust in September decreased across all five categories compared to the previous month. The largest decline was in the general interest indicator, falling to 1.50 points, a 12.3% drop from August. The overall government assessment indicator also declined by 9.3% to 1.60 points. Honesty saw a 2.9% decrease to 2.45 points, while problem-solving ability dropped by 4% to 2.20 points. Efficiency experienced a 3.5% decline, ending at 1.94 points.

Comparing the Milei administration with previous administrations, the current ICG score of 1.94 is lower than the 2.62 points recorded by former President Néstor Kirchner at the same stage of his administration. It also surpasses the levels observed under Cristina Kirchner's terms and those of Mauricio Macri and Alberto Fernández at similar points in their presidencies.

Overall, the Milei administration's ICG stands at 2.34 points, its lowest since taking office, with a notable drop from the average of 2.47 for Macri and 1.86 for Fernández.
