Trump vows to never ‘stifle’ AI as leading executives urge caution

President Donald Trump vowed on Tuesday that the government would not stifle artificial intelligence development, despite top executives of AI firms urging caution. At the unveiling of an AI chatbot, America.gov, intended to assist Americans with government services, Trump stated, "I will never stifle the growth of a technology that will be bigger than the industrial revolution. We can't stifle it, and we're leading by a lot."

Top AI executives, including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Greg Brockman of OpenAI, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, and Elon Musk of X social media platform, will have lunch with Trump at the White House on Tuesday. Trump's optimism about AI stands in stark contrast to recent concerns voiced by AI executives. Amodei had called for faster regulation on AI development in early September, while OpenAI recently decided to pause the training of its latest model amid reports of AI agents behaving unexpectedly.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also expressed a focus on safety during a recent interview, stating, "We have to do these in a way where we can make very confident safety cases and claims."
