Trump hails ‘morally binding’ AI self-regulation pledge

On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump convened tech executives at the White House to discuss regulating artificial intelligence, or "super intelligence" as he now prefers to call it. At the luncheon, the leaders agreed to a "morally binding" commitment to self-regulate the rapidly advancing technology without any legally enforceable measures.

Trump emphasized that the companies would police themselves through robust internal controls, multiple layers of auditing, and oversight by their boards of directors. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that the accord aims to assure customers that AI technology works as intended, with the commitment serving as a starting point for industry-wide standards.

The attendees also included tech moguls such as Nvidia's Jensen Huang, OpenAI's Greg Brockman, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, and Google's Sundar Pichai. While some lawmakers are calling for more stringent AI regulations to address concerns about job displacement and societal disruption, Trump believes that unrestricted AI development is crucial for outpacing China and fueling the US economy.

He assured that the tech companies will generously support communities that host data centers, promising to help with schools and teachers. However, public warnings from major AI companies about the potential existential risks of uncontrolled development have remained consistent, even as they continue to deploy advanced systems.

Despite these concerns, it is unlikely that Congress will pass AI legislation before the November midterm elections.
