Trump celebrates Senate passage of legislation to overhaul college sports

The Senate on Monday night voted 77-22 in favor of the Protect College Sports Act, bringing major changes to college athletics under a federal framework. President Donald Trump praised the legislation as a "really big deal," emphasizing that it will save college sports and schools. The bill establishes a standardized rulebook for athletes' ability to earn money from their name, image, and likeness, caps direct financial support from schools, and regulates transfers and media rights.

Athletes can transfer once without losing eligibility and have five years of eligibility, with exceptions for serious injuries. The legislation also allows colleges to negotiate broadcasting deals collectively to maintain control over game marketing and distribution. Proponents argue the bill provides needed stability amid rapidly changing NIL deals and frequent transfers.

While the Senate passed the bill unanimously, it faces hurdles in the House, where the Congressional Black Caucus and some conservative members have criticized it for lacking adequate protections and economic opportunities for Black athletes and expressing concerns over government oversight. The House is currently on its midterm recess, making it unlikely they will convene early to consider the legislation.
