Trial of AI Robot for Visually Impaired People Shown in Tokyo

On Monday, Mori Building and associated entities presented a suitcase-shaped autonomous robot in Tokyo equipped with artificial intelligence to aid visually impaired individuals in navigating their surroundings. The trial, set to continue through October, consists of two exercises: one focusing on guiding users through both indoor and outdoor environments and another allowing general visitors to interact with the device.

Developed by the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan), the robot's primary goal is to eventually become a rental service. The project's director, Chieko Asakawa, who has impaired vision, expressed her hope that the initiative would bring people closer to the possibility of independent city exploration.

Boasting advanced sensors and cameras, the robot can identify obstacles and walls, ensuring users' safety during their journey. Moreover, its embedded AI chatbot can be trained on specific store information and routes, enabling it to respond to queries about products and other relevant data. The demonstration, organized by the AI Suitcase Consortium, a coalition of companies backing the robot's development, was held in collaboration with Mori Building and other partners.

The consortium aims to promote the robot's widespread adoption, leveraging its capabilities to enhance the mobility and independence of visually impaired individuals.
