Three More Nigerians Killed In South Africa

Three additional Nigerian lives were tragically cut short in South Africa within a four-day span in 2026, according to Nigeria's Ambassador designate to the country, Femi Fani-Kayode. The incidents occurred on September 18, 20, and 21, bringing the total number of Nigerians killed in South Africa this year to 12.

Fani-Kayode's office reported the deaths to the Nigerian Consul-General in Johannesburg, who confirmed the details in a formal statement. As of now, 112 Nigerians have lost their lives in South Africa since 2022, with 32 allegedly murdered by members of the South African security forces.

The ambassador's spokesperson condemned the latest killings and urged South African authorities to investigate the incidents, bring the perpetrators to justice, and take measures to safeguard Nigerians residing in the country. He expressed sympathy for the families of the victims, praying for their peace.

The Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg also condemned the deaths, identifying the victims as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde, and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka. The consulate stated that Igwemmadu took his own life in an attempt to escape police harassment in Bloemfontein, while Olatunde was fatally shot at a bar in Pretoria after intervening in an altercation. Nnaemeka died after an encounter with South African security personnel in Primrose, Ekurhuleni.

The Consulate highlighted the February 9, 2026, death of another Nigerian, Emeka Clement Uzor, who was also murdered by the same investigative team led by Xolani Khumalo, who is currently running for mayor of Ekurhuleni. The consulate emphasized the need for thorough investigations and prosecution of those responsible, insisting that allegations should be handled through established legal processes and suspects remain innocent until proven guilty.
