The music in Hasmah never quite left

In a quiet yet historic moment, Dr Hasmah Ali, now 86 years old, returned to the violin after a seven-decade hiatus. On April 16, she brought her cherished instrument to an old friend's home in Alor Setar, a place she had last played when she was a girl. This was not just a nostalgic return; it was a remarkable journey of rediscovery and dedication.

Dr Ali sought a teacher, practiced diligently, and even learned songs by ear, all despite poor eyesight. Her first public performance came in December 2018, at the "Duo Lagenda" concert in Istana Budaya, where she played a solo version of "Fatwa Pujangga" and joined other singers on stage. This was more than just a musical appearance; it was a heartfelt tribute to a firefighter whose wedding was scheduled for that day.

Hasmah dedicated her performance to him by asking the audience to recite Al-Fatihah. In 2025, at 99, Dr Ali performed at the "Nota Percaya" charity concert in Kuala Lumpur, sharing the stage with Bella Astillah and other talented musicians. Her 20-minute performance ended with a standing ovation. The violin, once abandoned at the age of 16, had found new life in the hands of this determined woman.
