Streit um Hoheitsrechte: Falklands: Milei setzt London Frist, Erdölprojekt zu beenden

Buenos Aires: Argentine President Javier Milei has given Britain a two-week ultimatum to halt oil extraction plans near the Falkland Islands. If Argentina does not receive a response, the country plans to take the matter to the International Court of Justice in Hamburg, Milei announced on social media platform X. The plan in question is the "Sea Lion" project, a joint venture between British and Israeli firms aimed at offshore oil extraction approximately 220 kilometers north of the Falkland Island group.

Milei believes the unilateral exploitation of the Falkland Islands' natural resources, under British license, violates UN resolutions and international law. He vowed that Argentina will not stand idly by and will firmly defend its sovereignty. Additionally, Argentina has initiated legal proceedings against Thales UK Limited, accused of "illegal flights" between Punta Arenas, Chile, and the Falkland Islands. These flights were conducted in a British-registered aircraft without permission from Argentine authorities.

Milei's comments come in response to recent remarks by British Defense Minister Wes Streeting. "We are not back in 1982. The Argentinians are not capable of taking the Falkland Islands. We, on the other hand, are capable of defending them," Streeting said in an interview with British newspaper The Sun. The Falkland Islands, known as Malvinas in Argentina, have been a British Overseas Territory since 1833.

Argentina claims the islands based on the legal succession of the former Spanish colonial empire. A military conflict over the islands in 1982 resulted in hundreds of deaths, but the British managed to repel the Argentine invasion.
