Starlink Wi-Fi raises cost dilemma for LCCs

Low-cost airlines in Korea face a difficult decision regarding the growing popularity of Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi. The service, while offering high-speed internet, comes with significant installation and operational expenses that most budget carriers must bear. Korean Air, one of the first local carriers to introduce the technology mid-September, is expected to encounter fewer obstacles in scaling the service across its fleet due to its stronger financial position compared to other budget airlines.

Korean Air aims to extend its complimentary Wi-Fi service to the majority of its fleet by the end of 2027, after integrating with Asiana Airlines. This expanded service will also be offered to its LCC affiliates. Jin Air intends to start installing Starlink on its Boeing 737-8 aircraft, while Air Busan and Air Seoul are evaluating the most suitable aircraft for the system.

The integration of Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, coupled with the merger of three LCCs into the larger Jin Air, is anticipated to impact the cost burden on other budget airlines. However, it is widely expected that budget carriers with smaller parent companies will face a more substantial financial challenge when introducing Starlink in-flight Wi-Fi.
