Singapore man to face charges after fake AI crocodile image triggers Pandan Reservoir search

Singapore police recently charged a 30-year-old Myanmar man named Ye Lin with creating and distributing a fake AI-generated picture of a crocodile at the city-state's largest reservoir, reports state media. The incident allegedly took place last month and caused significant alarm, prompting an extensive search of Pandan Reservoir, a popular recreational area, which was subsequently suspended.

According to prosecutors, Ye used artificial intelligence to generate the image of the saltwater crocodile before sending it to a colleague. Authorities were alerted of a potential deadly predator in the reservoir, leading to the intensive search and subsequent discovery that the photograph was fabricated. Ye subsequently deleted the image and the related application in an attempt to conceal his actions.

During a court appearance on Tuesday, Ye expressed his intention to plead guilty, according to the Straits Times. Singapore has strict regulations against the distribution of fake images; if convicted, Ye could face up to three years in prison or a fine of S$10,000, or both. In addition to the charges related to the fake image, Ye also faces an allegation of obstructing the course of justice, which could result in a seven-year prison sentence or a fine of up to S$10,000, or both.

He is scheduled to appear in court again in November. While crocodile sightings in Singapore are rare, there have been about 30 reported in its waters since January 2025, according to local media reports.
