Malaysia's public first encountered Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Dr Hasmah Ali as a strikingly compatible couple, often seen together at official functions and embarking on countless shared adventures over seven decades. The foundation of their relationship began in 1947 when both were medical students at King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore. As the sole female among seven male classmates, Hasmah faced her share of challenges. Throughout it all, they remained each other's constant, learning to adapt and understand when to discuss issues and when to let things pass. As they aged, their shared moments evolved as well. Hasmir would often accompany Mahathir, attentive and supporting, adjusting to his needs. In a 2022 interview, she reflected on her habit of accompanying him in public, showing concern for his well-being in the face of public scrutiny. Their love, though unconventional, remained steadfast.

In their later years, aged over a century, their love became a testament to loyalty and companionship rather than a conventional romance. The story of Malaysia's iconic couple, born as two young medical students, ended with a unique blend of dedication and shared moments.
