Samsung Group to invest $1 bil. in AI infrastructure company Helix

Samsung Group companies, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, have collectively pledged a US$1 billion investment in Helix Digital Infrastructure, a company backed by KKR. This substantial financial commitment marks a significant expansion of Samsung's involvement in the burgeoning artificial intelligence infrastructure sector.

The investment was announced by Samsung on September 29, positioning the South Korean conglomerate at the heart of an industry where it already wields considerable influence, spanning semiconductors, construction, data centers, cloud computing, and finance. Helix Digital Infrastructure, launched in June by KKR in collaboration with the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia, and US power producer Vistra, boasts over US$10 billion in committed long-term capital.

Adam Selipsky, a former CEO of Amazon Web Services, leads the venture, which also includes Nvidia as a strategic partner, and Vistra as the preferred power partner. Unlike traditional data center developers, Helix Digital Infrastructure aims to swiftly deploy comprehensive infrastructure for massive computing facilities, a model that sets it apart in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
