Sachsen-Anhalt: Siegmund will im Dezember Regierungschef werden

AfD politician Ulrich Siegmund announced his intention to run for the position of Minister-President in the December session of the Magdeburger Landtag. He clarified that he was continuing constructive talks with another Landtag faction and several other deputies from different factions. Siegmund stated that he would declare his candidacy for Minister-President at the upcoming December session of the Sachsen-Anhalt Landtag, based on the current situation.

In the September election, Siegmund came out on top with 43.8% of the votes, ahead of the CDU's 17.2% share. The AfD is currently in negotiations with the BSW to form a government. These discussions focus on the content that an AfD-led minority government would need to implement. No results have been achieved thus far. Prior to the election, Siegmund had repeatedly ruled out governing without an absolute majority, stating that he would only seek the position of Minister-President if his party could govern alone, he emphasized multiple times.

He had not delved into the specifics of constructing a future government at this point. His goal, however, has always been to put a stable government in place. He stated that he would not enter the race for Minister-President without having stability as a certainty. Therefore, if everything proceeds as currently planned, there would not be a classic minority government, but rather a format of stability, the exact details of which he cannot disclose at this moment.

It remains unclear how Siegmund will come into office. The AfD holds 39 deputies in the Parliament, while the CDU, the Left, the Greens, and the SPD together hold 39 seats. The BSW is represented by 5 deputies. A majority in the Parliament requires 42 votes. The BSW has declared its intention to abstain from the Minister-President election.

In the third round, a majority of cast votes is sufficient in Sachsen-Anhalt. The four parties – AfD and BSW – have not achieved a majority in the first exchange, as the CDU declined their invitation to join, seeing themselves in opposition.
