Ronaldo shouldn’t remain in national team just because of stature – Luis Figo tells Portugal coach

Former Portugal footballer Luis Figo, speaking to ESPN FC, has shared his thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo's potential retirement from international football. The pressure has grown on Ronaldo to end his international career following Lionel Messi's retirement earlier this year. Messi's decision to step away from international football came after Argentina's loss to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final and the passing of his father, Jorge.

While Messi has announced his retirement, Ronaldo has not made any such declaration. During an international break ahead of UEFA Nations League fixtures, Portugal's captain has indicated that he would be willing to leave the national team if the coaching staff decided he was no longer an appropriate choice. Ronaldo has previously expressed his desire to score 1,000 career goals across all competitions, and at 41 years old, with 21 goals remaining, he is expected to continue representing Portugal.

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus had previously kept Ronaldo on the bench during the 2-1 victory over Norway, where he remained as an unused substitute. Following the match, Figo provided his assessment, stating that Ronaldo's decision to retire should be left entirely to the footballer himself. Figo acknowledged that the coaching staff would have a significant influence on the matter.

When asked about Ronaldo's retirement in comparison to Messi's, Figo responded, "Certainly, he should make the decision that best suits him." He expressed his respect for Ronaldo's achievements throughout his career, but stressed that Ronaldo's status in the football world does not automatically grant him a place in the national team. "It's a significant responsibility for the coach," Figo added. "But ultimately, it's a personal decision."
