Report: Tigers Part Ways With Two of Hinch’s Coaches

The Detroit Tigers concluded their 2023 season with a 76-86 record, failing to make the playoffs. In response, two of A.J. Hinch’s coaches will not return for the 2024 season, according to reports by Cody Stavenhagen and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Anthony Sanders, the first-base coach, and Juan Nieves, the assistant pitching coach, will not be part of the Tigers' coaching staff next year, sources with knowledge of the decisions, who could not speak publicly, disclosed to The Athletic on Tuesday.

Sanders had previously worked with the Tigers for a single season, after dedicating six seasons to the Baltimore Orioles. As the Tigers' first base coach for the 2023 campaign, Sanders had limited success, as Detroit only managed to steal 58 bases, ranking 29th in MLB. Juan Nieves, on the other hand, had a longer tenure with the Tigers, serving as their pitching coach since 2021.

Prior to that, he held the same position with the Toledo Mud Hens, Detroit's Triple-A affiliate. Nieves also had stints as the pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox and Miami Marlins. With the departure of Sanders and Nieves, the Tigers will need to find suitable replacements for their coaching positions.
