Rare scenes as a draw decided Gulf Cup 27 semifinalists between Oman and Iraq

Dubai: Saudi Arabia secured their position in the Gulf Cup 27 semi-finals as Group One victors, but their path forward was postponed until a surprising draw resolved the uncertainty surrounding the second semifinal spot. The hosts outpaced Iraq 2-0 at the Alinma Stadium in Jeddah on Tuesday, clinching Group A's top spot with nine points.

Simultaneously, Oman staged an impressive comeback, defeating Kuwait 3-1, resulting in Oman and Iraq sharing four points in Group A. The situation grew more intricate as the two teams were also tied on the relevant qualification standards – both had drawn 1-1 in their opening game, and the results of the final round left them equal on points and goal difference.

Consequently, a draw of lots at the InterContinental Hotel in Jeddah at around 12:00 am local time was necessary to determine which team would face Group B's winner in the semi-finals. Oman emerged as the fortunate team chosen from the draw, while Iraq faced disappointment despite their 3-2 victory over Kuwait in the earlier Group Stage match.

The winner of that match will then face Oman in the semifinal as the latter secured second place in Group A through their draw.
