Prosecutor reopens probe into Cornell gang rape allegations after accuser files lawsuit

New York prosecutors have reopened their investigation into allegations of a gang rape at Cornell University's Chi Phi fraternity, following a lawsuit filed by a woman who claims she was sexually assaulted in October 2024. The woman, known only as "Jane Doe" in legal documents, alleges that she was drugged, sexually assaulted, and left incapacitated by seven fraternity members after consuming alcohol and drugs at the fraternity house.

She filed the lawsuit on September 16, alleging that the university and the district attorney's office failed to prevent the assaults and adequately address the sexual violence on campus. The prosecutor's office is now presenting evidence to a grand jury, as he faces questioning from the public about why no criminal prosecutions were initiated in the case.

The university has stated that it conducted its own investigation, resulting in sanctions including expulsions and suspensions for several students. The national chapter of Chi Phi has not responded to requests for comment.
