KUALA LUMPUR: The police have cracked down on a syndicate behind a network of gambling call centers and online fraud during a joint operation targeting eight residential premises near the country's heartland yesterday. Operations Commander M Kumar announced the results of the special Dadu night raid in the nation's capital. The Joint Investigation Department (JSJ) Bukit Aman, in collaboration with the Commercial Investigation Department (JSJK), conducted simultaneous searches at the eight properties.

The arrests involved 67 men and seven women aged between 20 and 50 years, comprising 61 Chinese nationals, 12 Vietnamese nationals, and one Taiwanese national, according to initial documentation. The investigation found that the eight properties were believed to be involved in promoting online gambling, love scams, and non-existent investment schemes, in addition to being used as homes or bases for call center operators.

Police also seized various electronic equipment used in the criminal activities, including computers, gambling rigs, modems, and multiple mobile phones. They recovered a plastic bag containing five packets of the stimulant drug Yaba weighing 0.8 grams, as well as crystal and powder cocaine weighing 5.72 grams. Eight investigative papers were opened under Section 4(1)(g) of the Open Betting Houses Act, Section 420 of the Criminal Force Act for fraud, and Section 120B of the same act for conspiracy.

The investigation also included Sections 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act and Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act regarding various immigration offenses. The police remain committed to combating gambling activities due to their significant negative impact on national economic stability and social disorder. Comprehensive enforcement action against all forms of unlicensed gambling will continue to be pursued involving various stakeholders, including local authorities, the press release added.
