Police, Judiciary mourn Lazarus Opicho, pioneer Judiciary Police Unit commander

NAIROBI, Kenya — Lazarus Opicho, a pioneer in the Judiciary Police Unit and Commandant of the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) and VIP Protection Unit, passed away on September 28, 2026. The Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police succumbed to an illness at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi. Opicho's death has left the National Police Service and Judiciary in mourning, with tributes pouring in from senior officials who praised his long service and leadership in policing and security operations.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja expressed deep sorrow, calling Opicho an honest, dedicated, and exemplary public servant, whose contributions would be sorely missed. Chief Justice Martha Koome also conveyed her shock at the loss, acknowledging Opicho's vital role in bolstering security within the Judiciary. Koome extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues in the National Police Service.

Opicho played a pivotal role in establishing the Judiciary Police Unit in 2021, serving as its inaugural commandant. His career in the police service included significant assignments, such as Police Superintendent at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2009, where he was entrusted with security and investigations duties. In August 2024, following a senior administration officer reshuffle, Opicho was appointed commandant of the SGB and VIP Protection Unit, where he oversaw security at key government facilities and the protection of high-ranking officials and VIPs.

His promotion to Senior Assistant Inspector General in 2025, coupled with his continued leadership of the SGB and VIP Protection Unit, highlighted his dedication to the police service and national security.
