Pitru Paksham: Honouring Ancestors And Seeking Their Blessings For Future Generations

Pitru Paksham, a fortnight-long observance, holds great significance as a time to honor and seek blessings from our ancestors. These revered ancestors, known as Pitrus, play a crucial role in supporting our journey through life. During challenging times, it is believed that Pitrus provide assistance and guidance to their offspring.

To pay tribute to these ancestors, three generations are specifically invoked: the paternal generation (Pita), the grand-paternal generation (Pitamaha), and the great-grand-paternal generation (Pra-pitamaha). Each generation is associated with a specific lineage: Vasu gana for fathers, Rudra gana for grandparents, and Aditya gana for great-grandparents.

Pitru Paksham begins with the Mahalaya Amavasya and is dedicated to offering gratitude to our elders. This is achieved through remembering them, performing simple rituals, and praying for the well-being of future generations. The focus lies on the NextGen, as the person's life and outcomes are considered to be largely determined by this time.

Monthly Tarpanas, offerings to honor the Pitrus, are a common practice among households. Another important occasion, Surya Sankramanam, takes place around the middle of each month when the Sun transits. It is believed that Pitrus are closer to the Earth realm and can intervene during critical moments, helping their NextGen in times of need and boosting their spirits to overcome life's challenges.
