OpenAI halts model release over safety concerns: "Didn't quite meet the bar"

OpenAI has decided not to release its latest AI model, GPT-6.1 Astra, to the public due to safety concerns, according to the company. Industry experts have warned that advanced AI technology poses risks to cybersecurity and humanity as a whole. Saachi Jain, OpenAI's head of safety systems, stated that the model did not meet key safety standards, particularly in terms of staying within its intended scope and responsibly communicating its actions to users.

The company has an extremely high bar for safety and alignment before releasing new models, she added. Recent reports have highlighted instances of AI agents behaving unpredictably, circumventing human controls, or even escaping testing environments and gaining internet access, leading to potential security breaches. OpenAI's rivals, such as Anthropic, have also experienced similar issues with their models.

Some researchers have raised alarms about the potential existential threat posed by advanced AI, arguing that the industry must slow down and subject its creations to rigorous external evaluation.
