New York Times Executive Fatally Shot by In-Laws, Police Say

Jonathan McKinsey, an engineering executive for The New York Times, was fatally shot by his in-laws on Saturday afternoon in Dublin, California, according to Bay Area police. The 40-year-old McKinsey, who specialized in engineering and games player experiences for the Times, was discovered by a police officer on the ground outside of the Dublin Sports Grounds, where he had been shot multiple times and later pronounced dead.

Shouyong Zhang, 77, and Shili Chen, 77, were identified as the suspects in McKinsey's murder, both currently held at the Santa Rita Jail on pending charges.

The shooting occurred amidst an ongoing legal dispute between McKinsey and his wife, Candice Jang, over custody arrangements. A restraining order had been issued against McKinsey by Jang, while McKinsey had also obtained a restraining order against her and her parents, alleging abuse. The estranged couple had been set to appear in court in October to resolve their differences.

McKinsey, a transgender man, had claimed in court filings that his mother-in-law referred to him as a "pervert" and a "monster" after their son was permitted to wear a dress, and that his father-in-law had assaulted him during his recovery from a double mastectomy surgery in 2010. McKinsey joined The New York Times in 2023 after receiving his bachelor's degree from Georgia Tech and his master's from the University of California, Berkeley.
