Nairobi Rivers Commissioner John Kioli Kalua dies in the city after asthma attack

John Kioli Kalua, Nairobi's Rivers Commissioner, passed away after experiencing a sudden asthma attack in the city's central business district. His family confirmed the tragic news, stating that Kioli was attending to personal matters when the attack occurred. Despite his usual diligence, people nearby tried to assist him with an inhaler, but the situation proved fatal.

Kioli's brother, Isaac Kalua Green, revealed that the family was informed by medical personnel that all efforts to save their brother had failed, and Kioli was pronounced dead at the scene. It was noted that Kioli had been managing his asthma over the years, and on the day of his death, he appeared well and was engaged in his regular business.

Born with a strong background in climate change and policy, Kioli had dedicated more than two decades of his career to environmental and energy policy. As a member of Kenya's National Climate Change Council, he played a significant role in crafting key climate change legislation, including the National Climate Change Act of 2016 and various county-specific acts.

Kioli also spearheaded research and training on climate change, energy access, and environmental policy. His work extended beyond Kenya's borders, as he was involved in initiatives promoting climate justice and renewable energy policies in sub-Saharan Africa. Kioli recently joined the Nairobi Rivers Commission, tasked with restoring and protecting the city's waterways, bringing his expertise in climate policy, environmental governance, and renewable energy.

The Rivers Commissioner's passing leaves the commission to continue its vital work in addressing pollution, encroachment, and degradation of Nairobi's river system.
