Mother and daughter's artistic connections celebrated on outback catwalk

Brodie George, an artist of Walmajarri and Gooniyandi descent, is celebrating her 10-year-old daughter Ngoorloona's debut as an artist, marking a similar age when she made her own artistic breakthrough. The Walmajarri and Gooniyandi woman, who grew up in Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia's Kimberley region, is the founder of swimwear label Jalayimiya, launched in 2022.

Jalayimiya showcases local art and community connection. Last week, George returned to Fitzroy Crossing, presenting multiple collections at the SKUTTA 26 fashion runway, an event organized by the Marra Worra Worra Aboriginal Corporation. The runway showcased 10 designers from across the Fitzroy Valley, including Jalayimiya pieces featuring Ngoorloona's debut artwork.

SCUTTA brought together multiple generations of designers, artists, and models from over 40 communities. George noted that the event served as an inspiring reminder for the next generation, expressing her wish for a similar event when she was younger. Eva Nargoodah, an acclaimed artist living in Jimbalakudunj Community, also participated in SCUTTA, along with three of her granddaughters.

Nargoodah's art incorporates bush dyes made from locally sourced materials. She hopes the event will inspire young people to pursue artistic and creative opportunities. Eva Nargoodah and her daughter Ivy Nargoodah, who is also an artist, will be traveling to Melbourne next month to showcase their designs, highlighting the colors and culture of their community.

The event, named SKUTTA, aims to inspire and empower young people, emphasizing their pride in being their "deadly selves."
