Merz Negotiates With World Leaders Over Additional Air Defense Supplies For Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is engaging in discussions with various world leaders to secure additional air defense supplies for Ukraine, as Kyiv braces itself for a challenging winter characterized by ongoing Russian assaults on vital infrastructure, according to UATV English. At a joint press conference with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in Berlin on September 29, Merz underscored that bolstering Ukraine's air defenses is presently one of the nation's most pressing concerns.

"I am actively engaging in direct conversations with a multitude of heads of state and government across the globe to secure supplementary deliveries for Ukraine's air defense. This remains the most susceptible area," Merz conveyed. He further noted that Germany is conducting thorough consultations with its European allies to further augment assistance to Ukraine.

The matter is also slated to be deliberated upon during the upcoming European Council meeting, set for October 15–16 in Brussels. Merz elaborated that these deliberations encompass both tangible financial aid for the Ukrainian budget and additional strategies to fortify the country's air defense capabilities. "We are deliberating about concrete assistance for the Ukrainian budget, and we are examining every avenue to enhance air defense.

This constitutes one of the gravest challenges Ukraine confronts," the chancellor remarked. Merz cautioned that Russia is anticipated to persist in targeting Ukraine, encompassing its civilian infrastructure, implying that international backing assumes heightened significance as winter looms. He emphasized that Germany will persist in supporting Ukraine, positing that Ukraine's security is intrinsically tied to the security of Europe at large.

"We shall persist in supporting Ukraine because we are cognizant of one fact: Ukraine is an integral part of Europe, and if Ukraine succumbs, peace and freedom throughout Europe will be imperiled," Merz asserted. Germany has already pledged supplementary air defense support to Ukraine, with forthcoming packages anticipated to be dispatched this month.
