Manitoba PCs look for new leader as MLAs return for fall sitting

Manitoba’s legislature will reconvene today, with the opposition Progressive Conservatives searching for a new leader. The party caucus announced that it will convene to choose an interim leader, following Obby Khan’s sudden resignation. Khan announced his departure from both his position and the PC caucus, stating that he would join the Independents. He cited internal disputes within the party and attempts to undermine his leadership as the reasons for his decision.

The Progressive Conservatives currently hold 19 seats in the legislature, compared to the NDP’s 34, one Liberal seat, and three Independent representatives, including Khan. The next provincial general election is scheduled for over a year away. An analyst at the University of Manitoba, Christopher Adams, noted that the resignation is unsurprising but expressed sadness over the situation and Khan’s departure.

The decline in popularity among Winnipeg voters and the party’s overall performance might have made Khan's resignation inevitable, according to Adams.

To improve their standing, Adams suggested that the PCs focus on regaining the suburban Winnipeg constituency. He proposed naming a leader who could connect with urban voters, citing Winnipeg city councillor Janice Lukes or federal Conservative MP James Bezan as potential candidates. When asked about Premier Wab Kinew's potential decision to call a snap provincial election, Adams believed that it was more likely the premier would wait until the fall, given the upcoming municipal elections and the harsh winter weather.
