Man City sparked a legal cold war and these clues suggest how it will end

On Thursday, September 24, Premier League clubs received a brief statement informing them that all but one charge against Manchester City had been proven. The news prompted a flurry of activity and many questions, including what Pep Guardiola, the former manager, was thinking now. Rui Pinto, a figure central to the controversy, publicly quoted Guardiola's famous pre-season warning from 2016: "Fasten your seat belts."

The story began in November 2018 when Der Spiegel published emails obtained from Pinto's data cache. These emails revealed alleged manipulation of finances through backdated and inflated sponsorship deals to avoid rule breaches. The club had never denied the authenticity of the emails but claimed they were "out-of-context materials" designed to damage their reputation.

Uefa investigated the club, and after six months, found two main deals, Etisalat and Etihad, to be in violation of their financial rules. The club was fined €30m and banned from the Champions League for two years for "serious breaches" of regulations. However, the ruling was overturned in July 2020 due to timing issues, as the court couldn't use certain evidence from before May 2014, when the court's time limit began. Despite the controversy, Man City maintain their innocence.
