Jarred Peperoncini Peppers Recalled After Viral Video of 'Mouse'

Mezzetta Inc. has issued a voluntary recall for a specific batch of their Golden Greek Peperoncini Medium Heat peppers, 32-ounce jars, due to a suspected pest contamination, according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alert. The company learned of the issue after a TikTok video went viral showing what appeared to be a rodent floating inside a jar of the peppers. Despite the alarming footage, there have been no reported illnesses or injuries associated with the recall.

The recall specifically targets the GOLDEN GREEK PEPERONCINI MEDIUM HEAT, 32 oz. variety with lot number 720106 and SKU number 10106328. Mezzetta has identified the distribution points and customers who received the affected product. The company is actively working with these parties to remove the recalled goods from the market.

Mezzetta is requesting that anyone who purchased the recalled peppers not consume them and to contact the company at CustomerSupport@Mezzetta.com for further instructions. The company is also retrieving and analyzing the product to review its sanitation and food safety records, as well as production details.

Recent years have seen a surge in food recalls and outbreaks, often amplified by social media and 24-hour news cycles, making them seem more frequent than they might otherwise be. While the actual cases of foodborne illnesses like salmonella and norovirus are not unprecedented, the cyclospora cases currently being reported are unusually high for this year, with more than 20,000 cases already documented.

Experts emphasize that many of these issues have been present for years, but the increased visibility due to modern communication channels has led to a heightened perception of the problem.
