Japan's fusion energy startup to begin power-on tests at pilot reactor in 2027

Tokyo, Japan - Fusion energy startup Helical Fusion plans to commence preliminary power-on tests at its demonstration reactor in 2027, according to a statement released on Tuesday. The company is developing the Helix HARUKA, Japan's first integrated pilot reactor utilizing the helical method for fusion. The pilot facility is designed to validate the viability of sustained, continuous fusion reactions.

Fusion energy entails colliding atoms at extremely high temperatures to produce heat, akin to the process within the sun. If successfully harnessed, it has the potential to generate vast quantities of clean electricity with minimal radioactive waste, contrasting with contemporary fission reactors. Despite substantial global endeavors to harness fusion energy, 70 years of research have yet to yield a commercially viable reactor.
