Japanese travelers favor quick and condensed trips to Seoul

Japanese tourists are increasingly opting for quick and focused trips to Seoul, marking a new trend in the city's tourism landscape. Instead of embarking on lengthy vacations, many Japanese travelers are choosing condensed itineraries filled with skincare treatments, late-night fashion shopping, and street food experiences. According to data from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Japanese tourists averaged a 3.5-day stay in the city last year, significantly shorter than visitors from other countries, such as China and Taiwan, who typically stayed for about six days.

Despite the shorter duration, these Japanese visitors demonstrated a high repeat visit rate of 71 percent.

The trend is primarily driven by women aged 20 to 30, who made up over a third of all Japanese arrivals to Korea. These travelers prioritize frequent, targeted getaways over extended sightseeing tours. Industry analysts attribute the popularity of Seoul to its unique density, allowing tourists to seamlessly move between beauty clinics, traditional markets, and late-night shopping districts within a single neighborhood.

For instance, areas like Myeong-dong and Dongdaemun offer an array of K-beauty services, authentic markets, and bustling shopping malls, all accessible within a short distance.

Early 2026 consumption data revealed that medical and wellness services, including dermatology, body scrubs, and semi-permanent makeup, were among the top expenditures among Japanese tourists in Seoul. This data underscores the appeal of Seoul as a destination that caters to the desires of modern Japanese travelers seeking efficient, luxurious, and culturally rich experiences.
