The hoax appears to have been fueled by the circulation of a memorial-style image bearing Chan's name and the years of his birth and alleged death.

Chan's most recent widely reported public appearance was in Singapore on July 7, when he visited Pei Chun Public School as part of an event organized by the Lim Family Foundation. He interacted with over 900 students and performed his song "Hard to Say Goodbye." This recent documented evidence contradicts the viral claims that he has died.
