Israel kills senior Hamas commander in Gaza strike

Israeli airstrikes in Gaza resulted in the death of Hamas commander Izz al-Din Al-Beik and at least four others, according to officials from both sides. The militant group described him as leader of the October 7th attack that sparked the current war. Israel claimed Al-Beik was involved in planning attacks and recruiting, while Hamas confirmed his death.

The strike targeted an apartment building in Gaza City's Nasr neighborhood. Two additional airstrikes in Jabalia refugee camp killed at least three more people, with the Israeli military reporting two strikes targeting militants in the area. Since the ceasefire, Israel has killed at least 20 Hamas figures, including some identified as senior commanders or those who participated in the October 7th attacks.

Palestinians in Nuseirat refugee camp buried the remains of 41 individuals killed in Israeli strikes three weeks into the war. Over 800 bodies have been recovered across Gaza during the ceasefire, with estimates suggesting more than 8,000 remain buried. The US-brokered ceasefire calls for eventual reconstruction but little progress has been made.

Since the ceasefire, at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli airstrikes, and Israel claims four soldiers have been killed. Palestinian authorities report over 74,000 deaths in the Israeli assault on Gaza since October 2023.
