Inside Liverpool's increasing global investment in youth

Liverpool has significantly increased its global investment in youth over the past few years, bolstered by the profitability from selling young players since 2020. The club's global talent department, led by Matt Newberry since 2024, is responsible for scouting and signing young talents from overseas. This effort is amplified by the premium on young English players post-Brexit, which restricts clubs from signing players under 18 from European countries.

Newberry's team identifies and negotiates with young talents worldwide, with a focus on providing these players with a clear pathway to the first team. A notable example is Mor Talla Ndiaye, an 18-year-old Senegalese left-footed centre-back who joined Liverpool for around £1m plus add-ons. He has shown promise and is making progress at the club.

Liverpool also secured another centre-back, Ifeanyi Ndukwe, from Austria, and a Colombian midfielder, Samuel Martinez, both for future development. The club's global scouting efforts extend beyond Europe, as noted by the signings of Lucca Brughmans, a Belgian goalkeeper, and Djylian N Guessan, a French forward.
