How I killed Lagos cop during stop-and-search — 21-year-old suspect

On September 26, 2026, a 21-year-old driver named Olumide Olushola was involved in a fatal stop-and-search incident in the Egbeda area of Lagos State. He was paraded at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja on Monday, where he denied intentionally hitting Sergeant Johnson Okediji. According to Olushola, his brakes failed, causing the Lexus ES 350 he was driving to knock down the officer and drag him before stopping.

The incident occurred around 2:20 pm along Olugbede Street, when police officers flagged down Olushola's vehicle, registration number FKJ 223 KX, for a routine stop-and-search. Sergeant Okediji approached the driver's side as the Lexus sped off, resulting in the officer's death. The police commissioner, Fatai Tijani, confirmed that the sergeant sustained multiple fractures and serious head injuries before being pronounced dead at a hospital.

Olushola claimed he had taken the vehicle to a mechanic the day before the incident to fix brake problems, but admitted he noticed the brakes were still slipping when he filled up with fuel on the day of the incident. He expressed regret over the officer's death and claimed the Lexus belonged to his mother. An ongoing investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding Sergeant Okediji's death.
