HH Sheikha Moza awarded honorary doctorate

The University of Johannesburg awarded Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser an honorary doctorate on Wednesday, recognizing her tireless efforts in championing human rights and ensuring access to education worldwide. This prestigious honor took place at the university's graduation ceremony, which was presided over by Professor Letlhokwa George Mpedi, the vice-chancellor and principal of UJ.

The event occurred on the same day as South Africa's National Heritage Day, a date that commemorates the defense of human dignity and freedom against oppression.

Professor Mpedi expressed his delight at bestowing the honorary doctorate upon Sheikha Moza, highlighting her alignment with the university's core values of visionary leadership in education, social justice, and a commitment to equity and sustainable progress. Sheikha Moza has spearheaded numerous initiatives that directly contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), making her an ideal recipient of this accolade.

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, on behalf of the university, shared her thoughts on the honor bestowed upon her. She emphasized that Education City, established by her late father, Amir of Qatar, has become a hub for world-class universities and research institutions. In 2012, she founded Education Above All, an organization that has led to crucial resolutions at the United Nations Security Council, including the condemnation of attacks on schools, teachers, and students, as well as the establishment of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.

Under her leadership, programs have reached millions of children across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, including those affected by conflicts in Syria, Afghanistan, Palestine, and several African nations.

The university noted that Sheikha Moza's visionary leadership, dedication to equity, and commitment to inclusivity exemplify the founding principles of the university, promoting accessibility and academic excellence.
