Government plans new landfill sites in Greater Accra, Eastern Region

The government of Ghana plans to establish new landfill sites in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions to tackle the escalating waste generation across the nation. Mahama Ayariga, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, revealed this during a recent appearance on Eyewitness News. He noted that existing facilities are under increasing strain, with the Kpone landfill reaching capacity and plans underway for its decommissioning.

"We have plans to construct new landfill sites across the Greater Accra area and Eastern Region to accommodate the waste that is being generated," Ayariga stated. The Minister explained that the Kpone landfill's full status necessitated the transportation of waste from Agbogbloshie to another site. In addition to expanding landfill capacity, the government is exploring alternative waste-management technologies, such as incineration and waste-to-energy systems.

Ayariga emphasized the government's commitment to engaging stakeholders to adopt these technologies as part of Ghana's long-term waste-management strategy. He mentioned having discussions about these technologies this morning, reflecting the government's proactive approach to revising waste-management practices beyond landfill disposal.
