Got an iPhone 18 Pro? Apple releases iOS 27.0.1 to fix Face ID crashes

Apple has released iOS 27.0.1, the first update to the iOS 27 operating system, in order to resolve a Face ID issue affecting certain iPhone 18 Pro models. The update was made public two weeks after the initial iOS 27 launch. According to Apple's release notes, the Face ID problem impacts both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Some users reported their devices freezing and restarting unexpectedly after Face ID failed to recognize them, particularly during attempts to unlock protected applications. Apple had previously announced that they were working on a software solution to address this issue.

The iOS 27.0.1 update addresses three key problems: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices unexpectedly restarting when Face ID fails to authenticate, a color artifact appearing in photos taken using the 2x camera under specific lighting conditions on a small number of devices, and the touchscreen becoming unresponsive when both Notification Center and Control Center are opened simultaneously.

The Face ID issue surfaced shortly after the Pro models were made available to customers. While the update suggests that the majority of affected users should not need to replace their phones, Apple's software fix should resolve the problem for those impacted.

To update your device, simply navigate to Settings → General → Software Update on your iPhone or iPad. If iOS 27.0.1 is available, the device will automatically download and install the update. This latest iOS release follows the earlier launch of iOS 27, which focused on bug fixes rather than introducing new major features.
