Google appeals against EU order to share data, open Android to AI rivals

Alphabet's Google has contested two EU orders mandating it to assist AI competitors like OpenAI in accessing its services and search engine rivals to tap into its search data. Google argues that these measures would infringe upon privacy safeguards and inflict irreversible damage on European users. The disputes arise from the EU's Digital Markets Act, aimed at curbing Big Tech dominance.

The company contends that the compliance requirements associated with the DMA would compromise user privacy and security. This legal battle is set to unfold in Luxembourg's General Court, the second-highest court in Europe, with Google filing an appeal on Monday. Oliver Bethell, Google's senior director of competition, expressed concern over the impending measures, stating that they would force the sharing of personal search histories without adequate anonymization, thereby endangering user privacy.

The European Commission, tasked with enforcing the Digital Markets Act, maintains that the measures are robustly safeguarded, protecting user privacy, device integrity, and security. DuckDuckGo, an American internet privacy firm renowned for its search engine that does not track user search history or personal data, endorsed the EU's stance, emphasizing that the anonymization framework is robust and any appeal by Google would only buy it time.
