Ghana’s fuel consumption rises 12.24% to 4.06 billion litres in first half of 2026

Ghana's fuel consumption surged by 12.24% to reach 4.06 billion litres in the first half of 2026, according to a report from the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC). Petrol and diesel remained the top consumed petroleum products, together making up more than 80% of national consumption. Petrol sales jumped by 13.11%, while diesel consumption surged by 17.11%. LPG consumption also saw a rise, growing by 16.93% during the six months.

Despite higher fuel prices, demand for petroleum products continued to increase. Average ex-pump prices for petrol rose by 19.9%, diesel prices increased by 29.4%, and LPG prices climbed by 22.9% compared to the January opening levels. This consumption growth was attributed to volatility in international petroleum markets following the Middle East conflict and disruption in shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

In the first half of 2026, Ghana imported 3.43 billion litres of petroleum products, a decrease of 12.67% from the previous period. However, domestic production surged by an impressive 350.7%, reaching 878.33 million litres. The country's petroleum stocks also saw a significant boost, closing the period with a 91% increase from 440.24 million litres to 840.64 million litres.

COMAC noted that the consumption-weighted average stock cover improved from 3.2 weeks to 6.0 weeks. However, LPG stocks remained comparatively low at 3.1 weeks of cover.
