Game of Thrones Movie Aegon’s Conquest Sets 2029 Release Date With Director Owen Harris

Warner Bros. has announced the release date and director for Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, the first feature film based on the HBO series. The movie will hit theaters on June 9, 2029, and will be directed by Owen Harris, who previously directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Black Mirror. The screenplay is written by Beau Willimon, known for House of Cards.

The film will adapt material from George R.R. Martin's Targaryen history book, Fire & Blood. Harris has experience with Game of Thrones, having directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and three acclaimed episodes of Black Mirror. Fire & Blood chronicles the Targaryen dynasty's history, including the Dance of the Dragons civil war featured in House of the Dragon. The Targaryens arrived in Westeros after the Doom of Valyria and settled on Dragonstone.

Aegon I Targaryen, the central figure of the film, aimed to unite the Seven Kingdoms under his rule, resulting in numerous deaths during his quest to become the sole ruler. Aegon was aided by his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, who each rode a powerful dragon: Aegon had Balerion the Black Dread, Visenya had Vhagar, and Rhaenys flew Meraxes.

During his conquest, Aegon faced off against King Harren the Black and Meria Martell, princess of Dorne. The Game of Thrones series established that Aegon was aware of the White Walkers and passed this knowledge to future Targaryen rulers. His foresight about a looming threat in the North led him to believe that a Targaryen must sit on the Iron Throne to ensure humanity's survival.
