Fuengirola is set to update its traffic lights this week, with changes expected at crossings around the town. As of Wednesday, October 1, the flashing amber light will no longer appear when it coincides with the green light for pedestrians. This change is part of a broader reform of Spain’s General Traffic Regulations, which also brings new rules for electric scooter users.

The town council, led by Isabel Gonzalez, the councillor for Mobility, has announced these plans and is preparing for the changes. Gonzalez mentioned that the town’s computerised system will help make the transition smoother and allow for quicker adjustments to crossing times. The council plans to run an adaptation period, during which they will review and monitor the traffic lights to ensure they work correctly under the new rules.

Electric scooters are particularly affected by the new regulations. Helmets will be compulsory for all riders, with a minimum age of 15 to operate one. Additionally, riders must wear a reflective vest at night or when visibility is poor, such as during rain or fog. Anyone using a scooter for work, including delivery riders, must wear the reflective vest at all times, regardless of the time of day.

Gonzalez emphasized the importance of residents being informed about these changes. She stressed that road safety depends not only on the existence of rules but also on everyone knowing and following them.
