FFS Raises Flood Alert in Abuja, Warns Residents Against Dangerous Practices

The Federal Fire Service (FFS) in Abuja has issued a fresh flood safety warning to residents as heavy rainfall persists in the capital territory. The FCT Command's Controller, Muhammad Anas, cautioned residents, especially those living in low-lying areas, riverbanks and regions with poor drainage systems, to be vigilant. Anas stressed that residents' collective responsibility is crucial in preventing loss of lives and property during floods.

He specifically warned against dumping refuse in drains, constructing on floodplains, waterways and drainage channels, as these activities can exacerbate flooding. Other dangerous practices identified by the FFS include building without proper drainage plans, poor construction of roads and culverts, and farming or construction near rivers and flood-prone locations.

The FFS advised residents to clear drains, avoid settlements in flood-prone areas, and monitor weather forecasts. Residents were also advised to switch off electrical appliances during floods and move valuables to higher ground. The FFS emphasized the dangers of entering floodwaters, both on foot and in vehicles, and urged residents to contact emergency responders immediately if flooding occurs.

Anas reaffirmed the FCT Command's commitment to swiftly responding to emergencies and protecting lives and property. Residents were reminded to cooperate with emergency responders, follow safety instructions, and report flood incidents promptly to the appropriate authorities.
