El-Rufai’s son thanks Peter Obi for support during father’s detention

Bello El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has expressed his gratitude towards former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi for his persistent support during his father's detention. In an interview with Ibrahim Ismaila Ahmed, Bello mentioned that Obi's regular calls had taught him a valuable lesson in life. Despite initially being critical of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Bello now acknowledges the importance of Obi's support.

El-Rufai has been in custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission since February 18, 2026, as part of an ongoing investigation. He also thanked other politicians, including Waziri Adamawa, Governor Peter Obi, Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and his father Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for their help. Bello specifically highlighted Obi for his repeated calls to check on his father's well-being, which served as a significant lesson for him at the age of 38.

During his time in detention, El-Rufai has used the period to read, study the Quran, and reflect on his life and work. Opposition figures and other political actors have also expressed concern over El-Rufai's prolonged detention, calling for his release or questioning the circumstances leading to it.
