Durbar: Kano govt warns against defying restrictions

The government of Kano State has cautioned traditional leaders, politicians, religious leaders, and community heads against disseminating statements or actions that may prompt individuals to disregard lawful instructions or risk public tranquility. This warning was conveyed via a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Aminu Hussaini.

The announcement came after a video surfaced featuring Aminu Babba Dan’Agundi, known as Sarkin Dawaki Babba, discussing the state government's recent limitations on Durbar festivities and his perspectives on the current legal disputes surrounding the Kano Emirship.

Hussaini underscored that citizens possess the right to articulate opinions on matters of public concern; however, he emphasized that courts bear the responsibility of interpreting, elucidating, and enforcing judicial orders. He clarified that a private understanding of a court directive does not grant an individual the authority to disregard an order issued by a legitimate public entity.

According to Hussaini, those who hold the belief that a government directive contradicts a court order should seek clarification from the court or pursue alternative legal avenues. He advised against publicly declaring intent to defy directives or inciting others to do the same.

Furthermore, the government extended an appeal to all parties engaged in the Kano Emirship controversy to permit the courts to conclude the ongoing proceedings without speculating about the eventual outcome. The warning was directed towards traditional rulers, political figures, religious leaders, community leaders, and the general public, urging them to refrain from actions or utterances that could incite discord, unlawful defiance, or a collapse of public order.

The statement reiterated that while legitimate disagreement is permissible, legal grievances must be addressed through the courts, and lawful directives remain enforceable unless explicitly altered, suspended, or modified by an authorized authority.

The Special Adviser's office reiterated the state government's dedication to the rule of law, respect for constitutional rights, judicial independence, and the amicable resolution of disputes. It cautioned against anyone or any group attempting to exploit the ongoing dispute to undermine public order. The statement warned that any effort to mobilize individuals to disregard lawful directives, obstruct government officials, or disrupt public peace would be addressed promptly and in accordance with the law.
