Dr Mahathir says he did not expect Dr Siti Hasmah to die so soon

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad expressed surprise at his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali's premature demise, which occurred sooner than anticipated. The 100-year-old Siti Hasmah, who was reportedly in good health the night before her passing, passed away at the age of 100. Mahathir conveyed this sentiment during a conversation with the Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Riayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who paid his condolences following the tragic event.

Al-Sultan Abdullah's visit to Mahathir's residence was documented in a video, which was subsequently shared on the latter's social media platforms. In the video, the Sultan consoled Mahathir, stating that "Allah loved Tun Hasmah more," and advised him to take care of himself. Mahathir and Siti Hasmah, who were married for 70 years from 1956, had seven children together.

Siti Hasmah, a medical professional, was renowned for her significant contributions to public health, with a particular focus on maternal and child health, family planning, women's welfare, and community health. She also served as the president of the Welfare Association of the Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) during her husband's prime ministership.

Siti Hasmah's 100th birthday was celebrated on July 12, and their 70th wedding anniversary was commemorated on August 5. Her funeral, which was attended by numerous family members, political figures, members of the royal family, and the general public, was marked by a state funeral accorded to her by the government.
