Democrat Abdul El-Sayed courts RFK Jr.'s MAHA voters with new health platform

Michigan Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed is targeting RFK Jr.'s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) supporters by unveiling a new health policy platform. In a statement to CBS News, El-Sayed emphasized his party's commitment to public health, stating, "We've always been the people who want people to be healthier." The platform, "Building A Healthier America Policy Agenda," seeks to regulate pesticides in food, grant people the right to sue manufacturers for harm, hold polluters accountable, and remove substances like lead and microplastics from water.

El-Sayed, a former Michigan health official, has advocated for healthcare issues throughout his campaign, including Medicare For All and money out of politics. He aims to address concerns that led Trump supporters to vote Republican in the 2024 election, as he contends Democrats have failed to address their healthcare anxieties.

While Kennedy's endorsement has boosted support for certain aspects of the agenda, such as phasing out artificial food dyes, it has also drawn criticism for Kennedy's vaccine skepticism and the administration's support for glyphosate, a Roundup ingredient. El-Sayed remains open to collaborating with Kennedy on health proposals, provided he champions measures to counteract the influence of pharmaceutical, agribusiness, and food manufacturing corporations.
